Early orthodontic treatment - also called Phase 1 or interceptive treatment - guides a child’s growing jaw and incoming teeth while problems are still easy to correct. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have a first orthodontic checkup by age 7. Catching a bite problem early can make all the difference. Around age 7, a child has a mix of baby and permanent teeth - enough for an orthodontist to spot how the jaw is developing and whether trouble is on the way. For many children, the answer is simply to keep an eye on things. For some, a short, well-timed course of early treatment now can prevent bigger, more complicated problems later. Why Age 7? The First Orthodontic Checkup

By age 7, the first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in, which lets an orthodontist evaluate your child’s bite, jaw growth, and how the adult teeth are lining up. Most children who come in at 7 won’t need braces yet - but the visit establishes a baseline so we can watch development and start treatment at exactly the right time if it’s ever needed. There’s no cost and no obligation, so there’s no downside to knowing where your child stands.

What Phase 1 Treatment Can Address

Early treatment isn’t about putting a full set of braces on a young child. It’s about intercepting specific problems while a child is still growing and the jaw is easy to guide. Dr. Sample may recommend Phase 1 treatment for issues such as:

• Crossbite - when upper and lower teeth don’t meet correctly, which can push jaw growth off course
• Severe crowding - not enough room for permanent teeth to come in straight
• Protruding front teeth - an overjet that’s prone to injury and self-consciousness
• Underbite - lower teeth sitting in front of the uppers, often a jaw-growth issue best guided early
• A narrow upper jaw - which a palatal expander can gently widen while the bones are still forming
• Thumb-sucking or prolonged pacifier habits - that have started to affect the bite

Treatment at this stage may use a simple appliance like an expander, a space maintainer, or a limited set of braces - always the least amount of treatment needed to do the job.

What to Expect at Your Child’s Evaluation

Your child’s first visit is relaxed and kid-friendly. Dr. Sample examines their teeth, bite, and jaw, and may take a quick digital scan or images with our iTero® scanner - no goopy impressions. Then we’ll explain, in plain language, one of three things: everything looks great, we’d like to simply monitor growth (our complimentary “growth and guidance” check-ins), or a short course of early treatment would help - and if so, exactly what and why.

Phase 1 and Phase 2: How They Fit Together

Early treatment (Phase 1) doesn’t always mean your child avoids braces later. Think of Phase 1 as creating the right foundation - enough room, a balanced jaw, a healthier bite - so that any later treatment in the teen years (Phase 2 / teen orthodontics) is simpler and more predictable. Some children need only Phase 1; some need only teen treatment; some benefit from both. We’ll always tell you honestly which path fits your child.
