While undergoing orthodontic treatment, occasional injuries to the mouth can occur. Orthodontic emergencies typically fall into two categories:
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Issues may arise with orthodontic appliances, such as broken or bent components. If you experience any of these issues, please call our office during regular patient hours to schedule an appointment.
- Loose Bands or Brackets: These can often remain in place until you visit our office. Contact us to schedule an appointment for reattachment.
- Irritating Tie Wires: If a tie wire is causing discomfort, cover it with beeswax or gently reposition it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
- Broken or Poking Archwires: These can sometimes be adjusted with a pencil eraser or cut with nail clippers. If you are still experiencing discomfort, contact our office for further assistance.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
In case of a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, whether or not you are currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, please follow these steps:
- Ice the Injured Area: Apply ice to reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Contact Your Dentist: Reach out to your regular dentist as soon as possible. An x-ray may be required to assess the extent of the injury. If a tooth is knocked out, displaced, or fractured, your family dentist should address these issues first, as they may have the necessary materials and anesthesia for treatment.
If your orthodontic appliances become displaced or damaged after an injury, we will need to assess and adjust them as soon as possible once you have consulted with your general dentist.
After Office Hours
